How to get more Google reviews, the honest way.
Reviews are one of the biggest reasons customers pick one local business over another. Here's how to get more of them without breaking Google's rules.
Why reviews matter so much
Reviews influence where you appear in Google Maps and whether people click on you once you do. They're also what AI assistants increasingly read when they recommend local businesses.
1. Ask every happy customer, at the right moment
The best time to ask is right after a job goes well, when the customer is pleased and you're still on their mind. A simple, friendly ask works: "If you were happy with the work, a quick Google review would really help a small local business like ours."
2. Make it take ten seconds
Get your direct review link from your Google Business Profile and send it by text or email. Better yet, print it as a QR code on invoices, business cards or a magnet on your truck.
3. Reply to every review
Thank people for good reviews, and respond calmly and helpfully to bad ones. Future customers read your replies, and an active profile looks trustworthy.
4. Mention what you did
When customers describe the job ("replaced our water heater the same day"), it helps others and gives Google useful context. You can't script reviews, but you can mention the job when you ask.
What not to do
- Don't buy reviews or post fake ones. Google removes them and can suspend your profile, and the FTC can fine businesses for fake reviews.
- Don't offer rewards for reviews. Google doesn't allow discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews.
- Don't only ask happy customers through a filter. Asking everyone and handling feedback openly is both fairer and safer.

Common questions
Can I remove a bad review?
Only if it breaks Google's policies, such as spam or someone who was never a customer. Otherwise, the best response is a calm, professional reply that shows how you handle problems.
How many reviews do I need?
There's no magic number. What matters is having more recent, genuine reviews than the businesses you compete with in your area.
