Why isn't my business showing on Google Maps?
The most common reasons local businesses don't appear in the map results, and what to do about each one.
First, check how you're searching
Map results change based on where the searcher is. If you search from your own shop, you may see different results than a customer across town. Search for your business name first. If it appears, you exist on Maps and the question is ranking. If it doesn't appear at all, start with the fixes below.
1. Your profile isn't verified
Unverified Google Business Profiles often don't show publicly. Sign in to your profile and finish any pending verification steps Google asks for.
2. You don't have a profile yet
Your website alone doesn't put you on the map. You need a free Google Business Profile, created at business.google.com.
3. Your primary category is wrong
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses. A roofer listed as "Construction company" may not appear for "roofer near me." Pick the most specific category that matches your main service.
4. Your service area is too vague or too big
Service-area businesses should list the towns they actually serve. Listing an entire state rarely helps, because Google still favors businesses closer to the searcher.
5. Your details don't match elsewhere
If your business name, phone number or address differ between Google, your website, Yelp, Facebook and other listings, Google is less confident about you. Make them match exactly.
6. You have few or no reviews
Reviews influence both ranking and whether people click. A competitor with forty recent reviews will usually beat a business with three. Ask every happy customer, and make it easy with a direct link.
7. Your profile is incomplete
Fill in everything: hours, services, description, photos of real work, and your website link. Complete, active profiles tend to perform better than bare ones.
8. You're simply far from the searcher
Distance matters, and you can't change where you are. What you can do is be the strongest option nearby through reviews, a complete profile and a website with pages for the towns you serve.

Common questions
How long does it take to show up on Google Maps?
Once a profile is verified and complete, it can start appearing within days or weeks. Ranking near the top for competitive searches usually takes a few months.
Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?
You can buy ads that appear above the map results, but you can't pay for better organic map rankings. Those come from relevance, distance and prominence.
